Elzemiek Chell School Psychologist
Describe your organisation: Primary and secondary school, following the IB programmes (PYP, MYP,DP). Approximately 850 students. About 15-20% of our students has additional needs. Some of those students have an IEP or support plan.
Why did your organisation decide to trial the pens and which pens did you trial? We decided to trial the pens to see if they are a good alternative to using a reader for examinations. We have trialled both the ReaderPen and the ExamReader pen.
At the start of the trial did you have a group of students in mind that were willing to participate in the trial? Yes, we had a group of four students. Two of which are following the DP programme, two in the Middle Year Programme.
What expectation or hopes of what might be achieved by implementing the trial? We are hoping to find that the pens are a good way to support our severely dyslexic students.
How did you implement the trial? We have given the students access to the pens for a week (or longer) and had them try them out on different tasks, both in class as well as homework and assignments. We have asked them for feedback in their regular support sessions.
How did the learners respond to the pen at the start of the trial? Very easy to use, very open for trying it out. Happy to have a resource that might help them.
Following implementation of the trial strategy and at the point where learners had become familiar with the pen what sort of learning progress did you see? Most importantly with all four students we saw a greater learner independence, which is what we aimed to achieve with these pens. Next to this, two students reported a greater confidence when working on homework and less anxiety for assessments, due to the knowledge that they can use the pen. They do not have to rely as much on their reading.
Did you involve parents or home working opportunities during the trial? If so, what was the impact of this? Yes, parents were aware of the trial. We did not instruct them in any way but notified them and asked for feedback. With younger students, we would have asked parents to play a bigger role.
Please could you summarise the trial experience as a whole? Super.
What feedback did you get back? We have asked the students to answer the below questions. They like about the ExamReader: The fact that they are more independent and can use it during class as well as during assessments and homework.
They like the fact that they can use it, without disturbing others or needing to be in a different exam room. Overall, they would like to continue using the pen.
Any other comments you would like to add? Very happy to have been able to try the pens out this way. Hopefully in the long term we will see that students are more able to perform to the best of their ability by using this pen.
