Your school name: Glenamaddy Community School, Co. Galway
Describe your school (type, age, location, demographic etc) Glenamaddy C.S. is a mixed community school, pupils ranging from 13 to 18 years, located in Co. Galway.
Did you trial the ExamReader initially, if so, what “review process” did you follow and what conclusions did you draw? I trialled the pen at the BETT conference in London, and then brought back a pen to use in school with some students who are entitled to a reader for State exams. These students used the pens in class and also in class exams. During this trial I noticed the students became more independent and engaged more in class.
What do you most like about the ExamReader? I liked that the pens were easily portable from class to class. The students found the pens easy to use and enjoyed using them. The students said that they preferred being able to work on their own and it drew less attention to them than them putting up their hands for help. The earphones are a great addition as it means it doesn’t disrupt the rest of the class. I also felt the students worked at a faster pace while using the pens.
Please describe how you are using the ExamReader? The pen is used in mainstream and learning support classes. A number of different students with different learning needs used the pens. The pens are given out at the start of the class when doing comprehensions or anything with a lot of reading so that students can work independently.
Please describe how the use of the ExamReader has affected your students (performance, confidence, independence etc)? It definitely helped to raise the self esteem of some students that can now work independently. Their confidence grew and I found they were contributing more to class discussions after reading their textbooks.
How likely are you to recommend the ExamReader to others? I would recommend this as a learning tool, so that students can work independently, increase their confidence and hopefully increase understanding and therefore results.
Any other comments you would like to add? The students enjoyed working with the pens, teachers found the pens beneficial and I would hope to increase the use of them over time.
