Andy Ehigu, Teaching Assistant Year 3 & 4 I was able to quickly flick through the manual and get started by looking at the picture outlining the buttons, from that I was confident to begin using the scanning pens and I mainly left the kids to use the pens and develop their own independence.
Stephanie Kennedy, Year 4 Teacher I initially identified one student in my class to use the ReaderPen as she is dyslexic and has processing difficulties. We often give her pre-teaching exercises to do before class so she is more confident with the text when it comes up in the lesson. Using the ReaderPen with her pre-teaching work has definitely improved her confidence. It has taken decoding off the table for her so that she can do more higher order thinking around the text, otherwise all her energy goes into reading and retaining the information.
Year 3 Student I never really liked reading as I always struggled with it, I like people reading to me but reading on my own was a pet hate. In the past I found it very hard to read chapter books but now using the ReaderPen it is a lot easier and I can get through more of the book. This has increased my confidence even in the short time I have used it.
Charley Hewitt, Teaching Assistant Year 3 Once the students had become familiar with using the ReaderPen I noticed their vocabulary had definitely improved, by hearing the words they are able to use them in context. It has helped one of our EAL students dramatically in that respect, his language has improved amazingly and in turn it has made him a much happier child. It has allowed him to understand other pupils and play a part in jokes in the classroom.
Year 4 Teacher I made sure the ReaderPen was in my students tray and that she knew it was available to use, initially she has a great interest and thought it was really cool with the pen even catching the attention of the rest of the class. I found that when pre-teaching had occurred she had an increased willingness to share ideas and joined in much more in the lesson activity. This has allowed her to keep up with a slightly higher level group, keeping her to the same level as her cognitive reasoning ability.
Year 4 Student Using the ReaderPen has helped me to listen to words that I couldn’t say from reading books, which has made me happier to read on my own and made it easier to talk about what I was reading. This has meant I am able to add more to the group in class.
