Mock exams: their forgotten truth and how to fix them

Why hold mock exams in your school?

We've asked this same question to every educator we’ve met this year who’s preparing for the autumn term, and their subsequent exams around October time. Their answers have been varied, detailed, and insightful. Here’s just a few:

To familiarise students with exam format. Mock exams mimic the structure, timing, and rules of real exams, helping students understand what to expect and reducing surprises on the actual day.

Mocks reduce exam stress and anxiety by letting students experiencing exam conditions beforehand. Students can then become more comfortable and less anxious, which can improve their performance in the real exam.

Practicing time management: mocks help students develop strategies for allocating time across different sections and questions, a critical skill for success in timed assessments.

The results from mock exams can motivate students to address weaknesses and focus their revision more effectively.

Students learn practical aspects like filling out cover sheets, following invigilator instructions, and managing the exam environment, making the real exam process smoother.

What if your mock exam wasn’t a test, but a toolkit?

Though some critics question the value of mock exams, they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. But the way we approach mock exams can change for the better.

Lots of educators are already using mock exams to identify learning gaps, but it’s rare for mock exams to be considered a testing ground for intervention. Strategies like the literacy toolbox approach pull together literacy support to help with learning, but mock exams are rarely factored into the strategy, more often used as a high-stakes rehearsal instead.

But mocks have always been intended as a tool of discovery, of learning for both student and educator alike. It’s the chance you have as an educator to take on new resources that can revolutionise the way students take their exams, but the key to making the most of them is getting your supports and strategies in place well in advance of the mock themselves.

The time trap: why waiting costs more than you think

Behind every exam season, there’s a hidden cost that quietly builds with every week of delay: lost time. When schools postpone preparation, the result is a domino effect – stress spikes, access arrangements are rushed or missed, and precious learning time slips away. Consider the case of a Year 11 student who, due to late identification of support needs, missed out on vital access arrangements. The scramble to catch up left both staff and student anxious, and the opportunity for tailored revision was lost.

In another school, mock exams were pushed to the last minute. Teachers found themselves overwhelmed, unable to analyse results in time to address learning gaps, and unable to implement reading support some students desperately needed. Students, meanwhile, faced a “crunch” period of back-to-back assessments and revision, leading to burnout rather than progress.

Though these instances are hypothetical, they’re still very real situations happening every year in schools.

Experience shows that effective time management and early exam preparation are critical for ensuring students receive the support they need. Mock exams, when used proactively, allow teachers to spot gaps, adapt teaching, and arrange necessary accommodations well before the real exam pressure hits.

Every week you wait is a week you can’t get back – early action is the difference between calm confidence and last-minute chaos.

Digital exams are coming – are you still prepping like it’s 2010?

Exams are heading towards a big change in the next 10 years. Schools are already adopting some digital support and making changes but there’s a need to shift into a tech-first learning environment. Now’s the time to take that early action.

It’s essential to transition your school to support that uses a level of digital interaction. Each generation of students is more digitally literate than the last, and government plans reflect this understanding as they move towards improving digital standards in every school and college in the country.

These digital standards extend far beyond digital support for students: it’s about building a whole environment where an understanding of technology as a support system for educators and students is embedded through every stage of education. Where tools like a reading pen aren’t shunned for fear of alienation but are instead the first step students take in order to take their learning in their hands.

Journey into the digital exam era with Exam Reader 2

The easiest place to start when it comes to digital exam support for readers is removing the barrier around printed text so students can focus on comprehension and answering the question. C-Pen Exam Reader 2 is the UK’s favourite exam-approved reading pen because it keeps support flexible, accessible, and simple. It takes printed text and simply reads it back to a student, at their own pace, building their ability to use tech to develop independent learning.

There’s no barrier on Exam Reader 2: it doesn’t just help students with diagnosed conditions like dyslexia – it also supports those who might struggle with reading speed, have English as an Additional language (EALs), those who have difficulties processing information under pressure, or just general exam anxiety. It’s a reliable, calm, and clear voice in a tense environment that helps students focus on their comprehension over reading.

Sometimes, it’s not just about the facts and the figures for learners. It’s about having that little bit of reassurance that makes them feel confident. It can be the difference between a student freezing up and a student being able to give it their best shot straight out of the starting blocks.

Because every student deserves the chance to show what they can do, not just what they can read.
