Find out which UK exam boards permit the use of C‑Pen Exam Reader 2

The Exam Reader 2 is JCQ-approved under Section 5.6 of the JCQ Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) guidance. It is permitted as a centre-delegated arrangement, meaning no Access Arrangement Online application is required if it reflects the student's normal way of working.

The following UK boards are in the JCQ group – so if your exams are with any of these providers – you know that the Exam Reader 2 is approved:

  • AQA  OCR  Pearson (Edexcel)  WJEC / CBAC  CCEA  City & Guilds  NCFE
  • Cambridge Nationals & Technicals
  • BTEC (Firsts, Nationals, Tech Awards)
  • Functional Skills
  • GCSEs & A-Levels
  • Welsh Baccalaureate
  • FSMQ, ELC, and other vocational qualifications

All of these boards define the C‑Pen Exam Reader 2 as a Group 1 Access Arrangement:

  • Centre DelegatedNo Access Arrangements Required.
  • Cambridge InternationalCentre‑delegated; notify via Form 1.
  • National Open College Network (NOCN)Permitted if it’s the normal way of working.
  • Key Stage 2 SATs (UK)Allowed if it’s normal classroom practice (not for English Reading).
  • Common Entrance (CE)Recommends JCQ guidance; check with receiving senior school.
  • Centres Requiring Request or Authorisation
  • Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)Requires a request for use in external exams.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)Apply for authorisation.
  • State Examinations Commission (Ireland)Encourages use as an alternative to human readers.
